Strength in Pairs

From Forbes.com
http://www.forbes.com/home/free_forbes/2005/1031/045.html

....
What's the best advice one could give a young entrepreneur? Find a partner with complementary skills. It's no coincidence that so many of today's thriving high-tech firms began as partnerships.

Bill Hewlett and David Packard teamed up in the 1930s. Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore founded Intel in 1968. During the 1970s Bill Gates and Paul Allen started Microsoft; Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, Apple Computer; Larry Ellison and Bob Miner, Oracle; Roger Marino and Dick Egan, EMC; and Jim Goodnight and John Sall, SAS Institute.

During the 1980s John Warnock and Charles Geschke left the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center to found Adobe Systems. Len Bosack and Sandy Lerner, a husband-and-wife team working at Stanford University, hatched Cisco. And Scott Cook and Tom Proulx founded Intuit. The 1990s gave us Yahoo founders David Filo and Jerry Yang and Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page. This decade has seen Skype, founded by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis.

Pairings work. The companies cited above have a value approaching a trillion dollars.

The vision of the thailand ICT Minister

From Bangkok Post

"With open source, there is no intellectual property.
Anyone can use it and all your ideas become public domain.
If nobody can make money from it, there will be no development
and open source software quickly become outdated"

Many of IT specialists, students, users in thailand are signing the open letter [English]
which will be sent to the minister to clarify his misunderstanding.

We hope that this action will make him understands opensource.

XAMPP, Instant Server Software

XAMPP is a software bundle containing:
- Apache -- Web server
- MySQL -- Database server
- PHP
- Perl

It also contains other several tools, phpMyAdmin, for example.

It is very convenient because you can download only one file,
extract it and it's ready to use.

You can extract it to a flashdrive too.
In this case, you can run services from the flashdrive directly. Cool!

Look, if you are a student.
When you're at school, you use a computer in the computer lab.
When you're at home, you use your computer in your bed room.
etc.

But you can carry your web app work and run it from any computer
without installing any software!

The day of failure...

Today, I woke up with a bad news.
The web server, which administered by me, down.
I cannot access neither http or ssh.

So, the only way to solve the problem is to sit in the front of the console.
But I cannot do it now due to the security policy of the data center.
The person that can walk in the data center must pre-register
and it's limit to 3 persons per rack.

Of course, I'm not a registered.
So, I must wait another person who is granted... T-T

ShoZu, phone-to-flickr bridge

Today, most of cell phones have a built-in camera.
People can take a photo and send to other via bluetooth, email, MMS or upload to a computer and post on the web.

The point is the computer. In past, when you want to post a photo from your cell phone, you need to upload the photo to a computer and then post it.

But now, there's a service called ShoZu [http://www.shozu.com].
You can signup and download an application suitable with your phone and use it to upload your shot everywhere that have coverage from your cell phone network.

International Call

Yesterday, I got a surprise call. It's a call from my friend that are studying aboard. He said his computer was broken, so he cannot talk to other in Thailand with the MSN messeger.

This make me think about the cost of the call. Why the international call cost is so expensive?

Nowaday, there's a technology, VoIP, that send voice over the IP network (aka. the internet). It's cheaper than the ordinary way.

However, due to the delay and efficiency of the internet, the quality of VoIP is not good enough. When you use the VoIP, you may feel that you are using a walky-talky.

I hope that in the nearly future, people can communicate to other without any limitation of distance and languages.

domain name cost

Recently, I plan to buy a bulk domain from a registrar because I think it should cheaper than buy each domain individally.

The cost of domain selled by international registrar is about $7 when purchase at least 10 domain in one time. It's about 280 Baht while a domain registration in Thailand cost ~350 - 400 Baht, about 100 cheaper. But what are the 10 domains I will register?
